Sensata Technologies is pioneering innovative Arc–Fault Circuit Interruption (AFCI) technology for protection in protecting AC and DC electrical systems in aircraft, commercial & residential, and 42 VDC applications.

Based on proprietary algorithms, we are developing a family of arc–fault protection products to serve the needs of our customers by offering additional functionality to enhance the performance of their present products or as a stand-alone product to meet end-application needs.

What is Arc–Fault Circuit Interruption (AFCI)?

AFCI technology is a new class of protective device that provides protection against dangerous arcing faults. AFCI circuits distinguish normal transients in an electrical system while recognizing the electrical characteristics that are unique to dangerous arcing conditions, de-energizing the affected circuit when the fault is detected.

Hazardous arc–fault conditions can result in overheated wiring and has been shown to result in fires or cause a loss of function on the affected circuit.

Why is Arc–Fault Technology Needed?

Arc–faults can be caused by worn, damaged or breached electrical insulation on wire and cable, misapplied appliances or equipment cords, or loose electrical connections. These conditions have been found to occur in commercial, residential, and aircraft applications.

Hazardous arcing conditions are also a concern in high voltage DC systems, including the future 42 VDC systems proposed for automotive applications.

In residential applications, Consumer Products Safety Commission (CSPC) statistics indicate that problems with home wiring are associated with over 40,000 home fires annually. Similarly, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implicated electrical faults as a primary concern in numerous commercial aircraft applications and incidents, while the military has identified electrical faults as a significant contributor to safety issues and a lack of aircraft readiness.

The Arc–Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI) will detect potentially hazardous arcing conditions and prevent catastrophic damage caused by electrical fires.
